December has so many pleasant associations for me. It’s the holidays and time to be connect with family. The mountains are rich and soaked with heavy rains, the air cool and clear. Its a time for celebration and reflection, the end of a year, and the awareness of change as a new year approaches. Life is anything except constant, and as change happens, something new and wonderful has come to the month of my December.
For the forth year in a row, I have photographed the Cabrillo Winter Dance Concert for the Dance Department at Cabrillo College (Aptos, CA). Dance teacher and choreographer Cid Pearlman was one of the choreographers of this years show, and was my contact again for the photography of the event. Looking back over the photographs of the last 4 years, I notice how my eyes have come to see the space differently. 4 years ago, I was trying to catch it all. A year or so later, I knew I wanted to move in closer and ended up with a year of images that were more intimate, but lacking the negative space I have come to appreciate. The images here reflect my attempts to bring these elements into balance, all while trying to capture the movement in moments of potential and apex of expression. I’ve become more confidant working closer with the dancers all while respecting the room needed in the frame to support the movement with structure and space.
I hope you enjoy looking at the images as much as I’ve enjoyed taking them, and remember to check out the Sprint Dance Concert May 8-10th at the Crocker Theater.
